Since 1988 it has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It occupies the entire third peninsula of Chalkidiki, approximately 50 km long and 8-12 km wide, covering an area of 330 square kilometers. Today, Mount Athos, or the Garden of the Virgin Mary as it is commonly called, has 20 monasteries, 14 skeets, many cells, huts and seats.

Salonica, a big city with over one million residents is the biggest residential center of North Greece. It is situated in a fertile piece of land, close to the rivers Axios, Galiko and Ludia, near the lakes Koronia and Volvi, but also near the seas of Thermaikos and Strimonikos Gulf.
It has been inhabited since the prehistoric years and in the area there are marks of life since that time. The modern element of the city is being mixed harmoniously with its history, as it is still alive on the archeological sites, the byzantine churches and on its sights.
