Meteora. Preserved and protected monument of Humanity.
One of the most important monuments of the world, protected by UNESCO which has characterized it as “Preserved and Protected Monument of Humanity” is the most revered- second only to Mount Athos- religious center of Greece. The first monks came here at the 11th century. Meteora became a religious center at the 13th – 14th century, as many residents from the surrounding areas became monks.
The oldest way to reach the monasteries is climbing. Then it had the meaning of struggling to isolate and to seek out the divine. Nowadays is an alternate activity and the best way to enjoy the uniqueness of the landscape. Nevertheless, most pilgrims-visitors use the steps which are carved on the mountain. Enchanting walks through the trails which are hidden between the huge rocks. Rocks which is being said that were created by material brought there by the waters of a big river which flew through that area.
